What Is Revisional Bariatric Surgery?
Revisional bariatric surgery is a highly specialized medical procedure used to correct problems with a previous weight loss operation, such as a gastric bypass, LAP-BAND placement, or sleeve gastrectomy.
Each revisional procedure is unique depending on the patient, their prior bariatric procedure, and the type of complications that led them to pursue revisional bariatric surgery.
When Is Revision Surgery Necessary?
Patients most commonly seek revisional bariatric surgery to address poor results from their initial procedure.
The vast majority of bariatric surgery patients achieve exceptional, lasting results from their weight loss surgery. For some patients, surgical complications, failure to follow the post-surgical diet, or other issues result problems like limited weight loss, or regaining lost weight.
What Is A Gastric Bypass Revision?
A gastric bypass revision procedure may be needed when patients who have undergone a previous gastric bypass experience either poor long-term weight loss results, or have complications related to their bypass.
Options for gastric bypass revision include conversion to a duodenal switch, lengthening of the Roux limb, and reducing the capacity of the stomach pouch.
What Is Gastric Sleeve Revision?
A gastric sleeve revision involves a process known as ‘re-sleeving’. This procedure is often used in cases where a patient has stretched out their gastric sleeve by overeating.
During a gastric sleeve revision, the bariatric surgeon re-staples the gastric sleeve to tighten up the over-stretched stomach tissue and create a new, narrow stomach sleeve that is similar in size and capacity to the one created during the initial sleeve gastrectomy.
What Is Lap Band Revision Surgery?
Gastric banding, also known as the LAP-BAND, is a common weight loss procedure that involves the placement of an adjustable band on the upper portion of the stomach.
In cases when gastric banding has been poorly tolerated by a patient, complications can include the development of scar tissue around the band, infections, nausea, vomiting, and chronic esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus).
Lap band revision surgery involves the surgical removal of the gastric band using laparoscopic techniques, and may include repair of any scar tissue around the site.
Historically, bariatric revision procedures involved an entirely new surgery, creating an added burden on a patient seeking results. However, laparoscopic surgeries greatly reduce the risk of complications and healing times. Using a long, narrow, camera-equipped tube, surgeons can make adjustments to the digestive tract through several small holes in the abdomen that heal faster and reduce the likelihood of complications.
For patients who qualify, endoscopic procedures can offer compelling opportunities as well. Utilizing the OverStitch Endoscopic Suturing System, doctors are able to adjust the size and shape of the stomach. This process can be used to revise Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgeries. Using carefully-placed stitches, doctors are able to address enlarged stomach size to further reduce appetite and control food intake, triggering continued weight loss.
Will Insurance Cover Revision Surgery?
Coverage for revisional bariatric surgery is considered on a case-by-case basis by most insurance providers, so it’s important to contact your insurance company to learn about their qualification requirements.
