Gastric Balloon Weight Loss Surgery
When normal weight loss tactics like diet and exercise aren’t cutting it, making your earnest weight loss efforts seem futile, surgical intervention may be your next sensible course of action if you are serious about shedding weight. An alternative, less-invasive approach for weight loss is a gastric balloon surgery. A gastric balloon weight loss procedure, designed to “bridge the gap” between normal diet and exercise and more invasive weight loss surgery, can help you reach your weight loss goals by reducing your body’s food intake. The surgery consists of the insertion of a gastric (endoscopic intragastric) balloon which, when inserted, is inflated to limit the amount of room for food in the stomach; the result is a fuller feeling after less food is ingested.
A gastric balloon weight loss surgery may be viewed useful for those who have:
- High blood pressure
- Joint/bone disease (osteoarthropathy)
Gastric balloon therapy may be just what you need to jumpstart considerable weight loss and to ignite long-term wellness. Schedule a consultation with a surgeon in that can successfully perform a gastric balloon weight loss surgery. Call (470) 419-4380 or contact us online.
Gastric Balloon Weight Loss Procedure
You will be lightly sedated under general anesthesia during your gastric balloon weight loss procedure. To begin, a numbing spray will be applied to the entrance of the throat. A plastic mouth guard will then be placed between your teeth to keep your mouth open for a scope. The scope will then be inserted, passing through your mouth into your stomach. The balloon will be placed in your stomach and inflated with either air or a saline solution, after which the scope will be reinserted to ensure proper placement and inflation. The whole procedure lasts approximately 30 minutes.
You will be able to return home the same day of your surgery, and it will be recommended that someone drive you home and that you remain inactive for three days. Your healthcare provider will recommend that you maintain a liquid diet for the first week after the procedure. The following week you will likely need to adhere to a diet consisting of lean proteins such as fish, poultry and eggs, while also including a high ratio of pureed fruits and vegetables. Consult your healthcare provider for specific dietary recommendations as well as limitations.
Six months after your procedure the balloon will be removed. It is important to remember that, as a gastric balloon offers significant temporary weight loss results, it is not permanent. Observe the difference in diet your gastric balloon causes and follow similar, healthy dietary portions in the future that can encourage sustained wellness.
Do I Qualify?
Gastric balloon therapy is limited to those who have a BMI of 30-40. Additionally, you must be at least 18 years of age to elect this procedure. You may not qualify for a weight loss balloon if you have:
- Previously underwent a gastrointestinal surgery from which you contracted a sequela
- Previously underwent an open or laparoscopic bariatric surgery
- Inflammatory diseases of the GI tract
Gastric balloon therapy is a form of surgery designed to provide significant, short-term weight loss. While many find it a viable option for safe weight loss due to it offering a far less invasive option as compared to other weight loss surgeries, it is not right for everyone.
